Belize is the only English language-speaking country in Central America. While English is the official language of Belize, Kriol is a dialect that is spoken by everyone.

Belize Population

The first people to develop Belize were the Maya around 1500 B.C.E. The Mayas established a number of settlements in Belize which includes the popular Caracol, Lamanai, and Lubaantun.

Belizean Dollar

The Belize dollar is locked at $2 Belize = $1 USD. So it’s very easy to see how much something is costing in USD when you go shopping.

Belize has the lowest population density in Central America with 35 people per square mile or 14 people per square kilometer.

Belize is subtropical, with an average temperature of 84° F (29°C). Even in winter (November-March) the temperature in Belize rarely falls below 60°F (16°C), while the summer (May-September) is around 86°F (30°C). Humidity is also fairly consistent at around 85 percent.

Belize obtained its independence from Britain on September 21, 1981. George Cadle Price was the first prime minister of Belize and he served from 12 September 1981 to 17 December 1984.

Belize has the only Jaguar reserve in the world which is known as Cockscomb Basin Wildlife sanctuary.

The islands in Belize are called Cayes (pronounced “keys”) and total around 450 including those on the outer atolls.
